Our Cows, The 22 year old raw milk dairy in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada, has rebranded its raw milk as “Cleopatra’s enzymatic body lotion” because it is considered a health hazard under the province’s Public Health Act. The dairy was ordered to stop distributing raw milk, prompting its creative efforts to keep its products on the market. Our Cows also renamed its raw cream as a massage aid.

Robin Smith, the executive director of British Columbia Milk Producer’s Association isn’t buying it, calling the rebranding a “big fake.” Smith says, “It’s another under-the-table, sneaky way of trying to get around the law. It’s cloaking a cow in Cleopatra’s robes.”

Michael Schmidt, who became manager of the dairy in September, said he is trying to have the company’s products classified as cosmetics instead of dairy products, which would make them regulated by the Federal Food and Drugs Act.

Our Cows was deemed a producer and distributor of raw milk in June 2008, and has about 450 customers in the Vancouver area. The Fraser Health Authority obtained a permanent injunction prohibiting the dairy from distributing the milk, but its current operator, Ms. Jongerden, then labeled all of its products “not for human consumption.” She was held in contempt of court, resigned her position in September, and Michael Schmidt took over as manager of Our Cows Inc.
